Burien

In 1993, Burien became more than a neighborhood in south Seattle, and incorporated as a city. Population is over 30,000, making it Washington's 27th largest city. Located west of the Seattle Tacoma International Airport, the community features the Burien Library and the Highline Performing Arts Center, an 800-seat state-of-the-art professional theater owned and operated by the Highline School District. You will also find a number of cafés and pubs, small art galleries and wonderful ethnic restaurants.

The Northwest Symphony Orchestra calls Burien home, as does the Burien Little Theater, one of the longest-running theater groups in the state, open since the 1950's. Moshier Community Art Center and Park serves amateur potters and features extensive athletic facilities. And the Burien Community Computer Center opened its doors in 1997 with the lofty goal of helping Burien to become a community of computer literates. The Highline Community Hospital is one of the area's largest employers, with over 1,500 employees.

Three Tree Point, a residential neighborhood on Puget Sound, developed as the summer playground for Seattelites who built cottages there. Other neighborhoods are Seahurst, Sunnydale, and Gregory Heights. The largest park is Ed Munro Seahurst Park with its beach, picnic shelter, play area, wooded walking trails and fish ladder. Many Native American walking trails can still be found in the Burien area.

Visit the official City of Burien website and learn more about this city named after German-born Gottlieb Van Boorian, who settled in the 1880's on the southeast corner of what is now Lake Burien.
